As we’ve been in quarantine for almost four months now (crazy!), many of us have had ample free time. I have spent a good amount of time on streaming services, like Netlfix or Hulu, among other things, like most people I believe. I’ve been able to find some really good shows and movies that I want to share. So grab some popcorn (maybe throw some Crunch in it?), throw on some PJs, and get comfy!
The first show I started in quarantine is New Girl. You have to see this show if you haven’t. This is my third time watching it. The episodes are short and for the most part you don’t need to follow the show completely to enjoy it. It's good to play in the background while you do other things, if that’s something you like to do. The show is absolutely hilarious. To set the scene, a young woman just getting out of a long relationship ends up moving in with three single, quite odd guys. Overtime, they create really awesome relationships with each other.
If you’re into documentaries and informational shows and movies, Netflix has some really, really good ones. The most recent one I’ve watched is 13th which is about the major problems within the American criminal justice. It’s a must watch. Another must watch is Game Changers. If you want to learn more about plant based diets and health, this movie is for you. It focuses mainly on athletes and a few people with healthy issues switching to plant based diets to better their careers and bodies. Also, if you go on their website they have their own blog and a whole bunch of drool worthy plant based recipes! Netflix’s show Explained is also a super interesting show! They have brief episodes that explain anything from tattoos to cricket to cryptocurrency. It’s worth the watch, and you can skip around to what you like.
If you like kids/family shows and movies, some of my favorites (which are all on Netflix now!) are Casper, The Princess and the Frogs (you will have those songs stuck in your head, but that just because they’re so good!), Tarzan, ET, and Avatar: the Last Airbender (the show, not the movie, is my new personal favorite show). The only downside of Avatar is the fact that Nickelodeon cut it before they could release the fourth season. The audacity! I feel like I don’t have to explain all of these, but if you don’t know them just go watch them! They’re really great feel good movies and some of them are classic kids movies.
Okay, who doesn’t love crime shows and movies? A decent crime movie is Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile which is about Ted Bundy. I have some problems with this movie because I don’t think it shows just how awful of a person he was. At the time that this movie came out, I was in my high school forensics class and watching Ted Bundy, the movie based on him and his crimes from 2002. Crazy juxtaposition of the portrayal of Ted Bundy in these movies. Ted Bundy isn’t on Netflix, but it is on Amazon Prime. This movie, however, is much more disturbing and scary than the Netflix one. Unbelievable is another great crime show. It’s about a series of rapes that unfold across a few towns, which is unfortunately based on a true story. It’s hard to watch, but it explores the ways that rape cases are dealt with and how this creates more problems for the case, and for the survivors. One of my favorite shows is Mindhunter. The show is set in the 1970s with FBI agents studying serial killers trying to understand their psyches, and eventually developing the modern serial-killer profile.
I have just a few more shows that I guess could be put into a category called teen dramas. The Society is basically the towns high school comes back from a field trip early to find that they are the only ones in the town (no adults), surrounded by only woods, and no internet connection (waiting on the next season!). The high school social hierarchy drama is real. Sex education is also a really great show. It’s about a socially awkward high school student who basically starts an underground sex therapy clinic with his crush. It’s really funny, some drama, and a lot of second hand embarrassment. Lastly, The Outerbanks. This show was all over social media, so you’ve probably heard of it! If you haven’t, it’s about a group of teenagers on a treasure hunt to put it simply. There’s lots of drama, brushes with death, love, and a really cool Volks Wagen bus. Also all of the teenagers are living on an island!
These are a bunch of my favorite shows and movies on Netflix. I hope you can also find some joy or interest in them!
