These are some of our favorite films and shows that inspire power and and an uplifting mindset.
10 Things I Hate About You
This Shakesphere based film promotes women empowerment through the female lead, Kat Stratford, played by Julia Stiles. She refuses to run after men while in contrast, her sister is constantly chasing one. Kat does not let people boss her around and teaches her sister to do the same. This is a movie I wish I had seen sooner than later.
Kill Bill
This is a Tarentino cult classic and a must watch. It's action packed and the "Bride" seeks vengeance against the people who have tried to kill her and have killed her baby on her wedding day. The "Bride" uses
some awesome moves to defeat the other strong female fighters, constantly keeping me on the edge of my seat.
Legally Blonde
Reese Witherspoon nails the part of a stereotypical ditsy blonde but actually is an extremely bright, Harvard bound, law student. She is looked at as a fool in many instances but proves her intelligence, remaining confident and well above her haters. When facing barriers based on her looks, she continues to push hard and never give up.
Now and Then
This coming of age movie is great if you loved "Stand By Me." It is a nostalgic movie and reminds me of my own childhood and growth from then. It is a great watch for a night with friends or just on your own. It is about the different paths this friend group takes growing up and facing different but relatable hardships.
Little Women
If you prefer more modern movies, this version of "Little Women" was just recently released. The cast list is brilliant, including Saorise Ronan, Emma Watson, Florence Pugh, Timothee Chalamet, and is directed by Greta Gerwig. If you want to support women directed films, I recommend watching this one immediately. Although a bit different from the original story, Gerwig takes a brave stance in recognizing the female hardships of the era and allowing the characters to grow away from society's traditional roles.
The Craft
If you're in the mood for something on the spookier side, I loved "The Craft." This film acknowledges bullying, power complexes, sexual harassment, and racism. A side note to mention is that the fashion statements were top notch. The film is about a group of teenage girls who study witchcraft and the struggle to balance the good and bad sides of it.
